Make It Easy to Do Your Thing (DIY guitar hanger)

I’ve learned that inefficiency can ruin my dreams pretty quick. It often goes something like this… I’m all in the mood to do some baking. I’m dreaming of the heavenly smell that’ll fill the air; the sugary confection that’ll melt in my mouth; the praises that’ll be sung in my honor from my men-folk…

But then, I imagine a hassle… I’ll need to move the crock pot, waffle maker, food processor and blender to get to the mixer and cake pans. It’s a lotta racket, there’s tangled cords, I’m throwing stuff, my men-folk are shaking their heads and questioning my salvation.

Forget it. It’s too much trouble. There will be no baked goods and no praises, today.

Sometimes, I’m extra determined and take on the challenge, but more often than not, inefficiency spoils my plans. I know that if things were easier to get to, my performance would improve. This applies to everything I do. Sometimes I need to de-clutter or re-organize. Sometimes I need to just make something a little more accessible.

Consider music practice. All that zipping and unzipping doesn’t exactly help us stay consistent.

The solution? An inexpensive, DIY guitar hanger. We’ve practiced much more since putting this thing up. It’s so easy to grab and play!

What you’ll need for the guitar hanger:

  • a finished board for the # of guitars it will hold (I painted a weathered look on a piece of 3/4″ X 7 1/4″ X 4′ red oak)
  • a pair of 1/2″ X 5 1/2″ dowel pieces for each instrument
  • 4 1/2″ X 3″ piece of felt for each dowel
  • Spray adhesive to adhere the felt to the dowels
  • a drill & bit for the dowel holes
  • wood glue for securing the dowels

What you’ll need for the cleat to secure the hanger to the wall:

  • a table saw
  • a 3/4″ X 1 1/2″ strip of wood cut the same length as your guitar hanger (you’ll cut this in half, length-wise, at an angle on the table saw)
  • (2) 3/4″ X 1 1/2″ X 4″ blocks of wood
  • screws/nails

So how easy is it to do your thing?? I hope you’re inspired to look for ways to remove the obstacles that hold you back from doing what you love. Keep practicing those unique things that God has placed in your hands and heart, and share ’em with us, okay!

  1. Loved this idea so much and made it right away.. We decided to get guitar handles to hold the guitars just because we have some expensive guitars but it looks amazing.. Thanks so much for the idea!!!

    • That’s awesome – I’m so glad it was useful to you! =D Good plan to go with actual guitar handles – definitely even safer and adjustable too. Thank you and happy New Year to you!!

    • Thanks for writing, Joe! I googled a Maton Coolibah because I didn’t know — lol, but yes it does look like mine. Mine is actually a Gibson that my mom gave me when I was 16. =)

    • I just measured our individual instruments, so they vary. Another little more expensive option would be to use those adjustable arms rather than dowels. Good luck! 🙂
